Procrastination: Causes and Simple Solutions Without Willpower

Procrastination is often a problem of starting, not of character.

Many people try to "beat" procrastination with willpower. This works in the short term. Then the same old story returns: procrastination, tension, and guilt.

It's easier to treat it as a design problem:
What makes startup too expensive?

4 most common causes

1) The task is too big

When a task is unclear, the brain avoids it.
Solution: The first step has to be ridiculously small .

2) You have decision fatigue

If you spend all day deciding (work, home, phone), there will be no “fuel” left at the end for important things.

3) Missing startup environment

If you have to “get organized” to take action, then procrastination will win.

Solution: Prepare the environment the day before.

4) There is fear in the background (of evaluation/failure)

Motivation doesn't help here. Lowering the stakes helps:
"I'm just doing the bare minimum. This is a system test."

7-day system (no tension)

Day 1-2: 2 minute entry threshold

Rule: for 2 days you do only the minimum.
You have to build a start , not a result.

Day 3–4: Environment + Time Block

Set one block during the day: 15–30 minutes (as much as is realistic).
In this block: only one thing, no multitasking.

Day 5-7: The Return Rule

If you miss a day, you go back to the minimum the next day.
You're not catching up. You're not punishing yourself.

What to do "here and now" when you procrastinate

  1. Change the task to a 2-minute minimum

  2. Set the timer for 2 minutes

  3. Just make a start

  4. End without judgment

It is supposed to work even when you "don't want to".

If you want to have it sorted out

The “30 Day System” package also includes a tracker and a return card that take the decisions off your mind:
